Shapes

2D shapes with sides and corners, 3D objects with faces, edges and vertices.

2D shapes

Flat shapes. They have length and width but no depth.

  • CircleSides: 1 curved edge
    Corners: 0
Every point on the edge is the same distance from the middle.
  • TriangleSides: 3
    Corners: 3
Its three angles always add up to 180°.
  • SquareSides: 4
    Corners: 4
All sides the same length, all corners right angles.
  • RectangleSides: 4
    Corners: 4
Opposite sides the same length, all corners right angles.
  • PentagonSides: 5
    Corners: 5
    Penta means five.
  • HexagonSides: 6
    Corners: 6
    Bees build honeycomb in hexagons.
  • OctagonSides: 8
    Corners: 8
A stop sign is an octagon.

3D objects

Solid objects with length, width and depth. A face is a surface, an edge is where two faces meet, and a vertex is a corner where edges meet.

  • CubeFaces: 6 flat
    Edges: 12
    Vertices: 8
All six faces are the same square. Like a dice.
  • Rectangular prismFaces: 6 flat
    Edges: 12
    Vertices: 8
Faces are rectangles. Like a cereal box.
  • Triangular prismFaces: 5 flat
    Edges: 9
    Vertices: 6
Two triangle ends joined by rectangles. Like a camping tent.
  • Square-based pyramidFaces: 5 flat
    Edges: 8
    Vertices: 5
A square base with triangles meeting at the top. Like the pyramids in Egypt.
  • SphereFaces: 1 curved surface
    Edges: 0
    Vertices: 0
    Perfectly round, like a ball.
  • CylinderFaces: 2 flat, 1 curved surface
    Edges: 2 curved
    Vertices: 0
Two circles joined by a curved side. Like a tin can.
  • ConeFaces: 1 flat, 1 curved surface
    Edges: 1 curved
    Vertices: 1
A circle base that comes to a point. Like an ice-cream cone.
